How Inkroads renders a city map

Inkroads draws OpenStreetMap vector data with your chosen theme and layers, then produces a high-resolution PNG for printing.

Type a city into Inkroads and a styled map appears in under a second. Volunteers collected the street data while walking neighborhoods with GPS devices. Our themes turn that geographic data into poster art, and the rendering engine draws thousands of road segments, water features, and park boundaries in real time.

The process starts with open map data and ends with a print-ready file.

It starts with open data

Every Inkroads map uses OpenStreetMap, the open geographic database behind apps used by hundreds of millions of people. Like Wikipedia, it relies on a global community. Mappers add and maintain roads, buildings, waterways, parks, and railways.

The data becomes vector tiles, small packages of geographic information organized by location and zoom level. Open Tokyo, Buenos Aires, or your hometown and the map loads tiles for that view. It never has to fetch one giant image of the whole city.

Inkroads doesn't use satellite imagery or pre-rendered map images. The renderer draws each feature from geographic data, so a theme can control a road's color, width, and visibility. Underneath, that road is a set of coordinates.

Themes are style instructions

Selecting Noir, Blueprint, or one of our other 44 themes applies visual rules to the map data. It works much like a CSS stylesheet for geography.

Each theme defines:

  • Background color: the canvas beneath the map
  • Road colors and widths: separate treatments for highways, main roads, residential streets, and paths
  • Water styling: colors for oceans, rivers, lakes, and canals
  • Park and green space fills: prominent in some themes and muted in others
  • Building footprints: shown or hidden in their own color
  • Railway lines: dashed, solid, or hidden, depending on the theme

The same Paris street exists in every theme. Gold Foil renders it as a warm amber line, while Arctic uses a cool silver. The coordinates stay fixed as the presentation changes.

Layer controls

Layer controls let you decide which map elements appear. You can toggle water and parks, remove buildings, or hide railways.

Those choices change the composition. An Amsterdam poster with water enabled centers the canals. Turn water off and the streets take over instead.

The live preview

The map updates as you adjust themes, layers, zoom, rotation, and text. The preview uses the rendering engine that produces the final poster.

It also uses the final vector tile data and styling rules. You can experiment before generating the file and see the design you will receive.

Producing the print-ready file

After you choose Generate, Inkroads runs four steps:

  1. Map capture: The renderer draws the map at high resolution. Large prints can show details that aren't visible in the on-screen preview.

  2. Job creation: Inkroads saves the theme, layers, text, position, and size, then queues the poster for processing.

  3. Server compositing: A rendering process combines the map with the city name, coordinates, taglines, and any effects at the requested dimensions and resolution.

  4. Delivery: Inkroads stores the completed poster and emails you a download link for the high-resolution PNG.

The process often finishes within minutes. Premium subscribers receive priority processing.

Why the finished poster looks clean

A few deliberate design decisions contribute to the quality of the final output:

No labels by default. We hide street names, neighborhood labels, and point-of-interest markers unless you enable them. That keeps the poster closer to line art than a reference map.

Road hierarchy. Highways, arterials, collectors, residential streets, and paths use different widths and opacities. Major roads anchor the composition while minor streets add texture, so you can read the network without a legend.

Negative space. Water, parks, and map edges break up the road network. The ocean around San Francisco and the parks across London carry as much visual weight as the streets. Our minimalist map design guide covers this approach.

The data behind your city

OpenStreetMap covers almost every inhabited place on Earth. Major cities may include individual building footprints, park benches, and footpaths. Smaller towns often have less detail, but their road networks still provide enough structure for a poster.

The density of the source data explains why some cities produce more detailed posters. Mappers have recorded London, Berlin, and Tokyo in enough detail to support close zoom levels. Our best cities for map art guide has more examples.
