Antananarivo has been Madagascar's largest population centre since at least the eighteenth century. The presidency, National Assembly, Senate, Supreme Court, and numerous national institutions are based in the highland capital.

Steep terrain breaks the road network into winding bands rather than a continuous grid. Dense streets follow ridges and slopes across the central city, leaving irregular gaps where the ground limits development.

More than a kilometre above sea level, the 3.5 km view crosses Antananarivo-Renivohitra and the central government districts. Roads bend across the high ground.
