About 78,000 people live in Jaisalmer, including residents inside the fort. Rawal Jaisal of the Bhati Rajput clan founded the city, which later became the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer district.

Tight lanes occupy the ridge and fort, then spread into the town below. Outside that compact center, the road network thins quickly into the surrounding desert.

Jaisalmer Fort, its sandstone ridge, and the surrounding town occupy a two-kilometre radius. Streets gather most densely around the citadel and thin toward the desert edge.
