Kyoto was Japan's ninth-most populous city in 2020. More than half of Kyoto Prefecture's residents live in the city, which also belongs to the larger Keihanshin region with Osaka and Kobe.

Straight north-south and east-west streets give central Kyoto a measured block pattern. Rail lines and the larger grounds around temples, shrines, and gardens interrupt that order at clear intervals.

At 2.5 kilometres from the center, Kyoto's regular grid fills most of the frame. Rail corridors and large historic grounds create the strongest departures from its repeated blocks.

Place the charcoal grid on warm off-white and reserve one muted red for rail lines. Temple and garden grounds should remain open, preserving their scale among the small blocks.
