Around nine million people live in Tehran and 16.8 million in the metropolitan area. It is West Asia's most populous city and the Middle East's largest metropolitan area.

Dense central districts are crossed by long arterial roads connecting the municipalities of Greater Tehran. Elevation increases northward, changing the road pattern toward the mountain foothills.

The Tehran frame extends five kilometres around the center, containing administrative, cultural, and residential districts crossed by major arteries. It stays within the dense metropolitan core below the Alborz foothills.

Shift the ground from desert tan in the south toward pale mountain gray in the north. Black arterial lines can carry the city's long cross-district routes through that gradient.
